On 18th September 2014 we were once again entertained by Nigel Ogden, present of the BBC’s long-running “The Organist Entertains”.
“The Organist Entertains” started in 1969 with Robin Richmond until Nigel took over in 1980. The programme features recordings and live broadcasts of theatre organs, pipe organs and Hammond organs around the UK and the rest of the world.
Nigel, whose father was a Church organist, was influenced in his youth on his family trips to see Reginald Dixon at the Wurlitzer in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. He got ‘hooked’, so, having initially trained as a Teacher, he endeavoured to get involved in the music business. Initially this meant selling electronic organs from Hyde, Cheshire before Nigel set up his own retail business in Sale, Greater Manchester. It was during this time that he started presenting “The Organist Entertains” – since 1972.
When not presenting the programme for the BBC, Nigel keeps himself very busy with playing concerts in Churches, Cathedrals and Church Halls and we were very excited to welcome him back to St Mary’s.
